The consolidation rules, and how the box gets built

Consolidation is not just stacking parcels. The rules decide which goods can share a box, how it is charged, and when it has to leave. Here it is in order from ordering to dispatch, with a charging table.

Consolidation is decided before the parcels arrive

The mistake most first-timers make is treating consolidation as a packing task. It is not — it is a routing decision that determines how many boxes you pay for. Three parcels from three shops shipped separately pay first-weight three times. Combined into one box, that repeats less than once.

So the rules that matter are not about tape and cardboard. They are about timing, eligibility and how the charge is calculated.

Rule one: the free-storage clock starts at first arrival

90 days of free storage is counted from the day your first parcel arrives at the warehouse, not from the day you placed the order. Everything else in the flow is downstream of that date.

This is worth internalising because it determines when you need to consolidate by. The window is generous, but it is not open-ended, and parcels that sit past it move into paid storage.

Rule two: parcels must share a member ID

Parcels can go into the same export box when they are under the same member ID and both arrived within the free-storage window. Different accounts cannot be combined, and parcels arriving after you have already dispatched the box obviously cannot go in it.

This is why people get caught out: they place orders under a different account for a friend, and the parcels cannot be merged.

Rule three: the address format is not flexible

Your warehouse address is not your home address, and the format matters. Copy it from your account page rather than typing it:

Your name / Youmanman warehouse number / Warehouse address / Shenzhen, China / Your member ID

If your real name appears twice, keep only one — duplicate name fields are a common cause of parcels being held. And note the distinction worth memorising: on the Taobao order, the delivery address is your own home, while the warehouse is the recipient. Those are two different fields on the same form, and swapping them sends the parcel to a stranger.

Rule four: restricted items do not get consolidated on request

Battery-containing products, liquids subject to per-item volume limits, powders and pastes, and generally prohibited categories such as flammable goods, compressed gas, blades, live plants and animals, tobacco and alcohol — these need to be confirmed before dispatch regardless of the consolidation request. Do not declare a restricted item as general goods. A seized parcel is destroyed and the freight is not refunded.

Youmanman Parcel Forwarding handles parcels from Taobao, JD, Pinduoduo and 1688 going home to overseas families, with 90 days of free storage and consolidation packing.

How the charge is built up

Freight is settled in four legs, not as one flat rate:

Leg What it covers Charged on
1. Inbound Domestic parcel from the seller to our warehouse Actual weight
2. Consolidation Combining parcels into one export box Handling
3. Export main carriage Main carriage, box to destination country Chargeable weight
4. Last mile Destination country to your door Chargeable weight

Because legs 3 and 4 are charged on chargeable weight, consolidation helps twice: it removes the repeated first weight, and it reduces the number of boxes paying outer-packaging charges.

The box is re-measured, not summed

This is the detail that surprises people. The export box does not inherit the sum of its parcels' weights. It is weighed and measured as one box, and the larger of box weight and its volumetric weight becomes the chargeable weight for the whole thing.

Since the outer box volume is usually much smaller than the total volume of the separate parcels, this is exactly where the saving comes from.

FAQ

Q: How long can parcels stay before I need to ship? A: 90 days of free storage, counted from the day your first parcel arrives, not the day you ordered. Consolidate within that window.

Q: Can I consolidate parcels from different addresses? A: They can be combined if they are under the same member ID and both arrived inside the free-storage window. Parcels under different accounts cannot be merged.

Q: When is consolidation worth it? A: Consolidation pays off once you have several parcels. With one or two items, the consolidation handling can exceed what direct shipping costs.

Q: How is the export box charged? A: The box is weighed and measured on its own after consolidation, and the larger of box weight and its volumetric weight is the chargeable weight. It is not the sum of the parcels inside.

Q: Can I send a battery inside a consolidated box? A: Only after it is confirmed. Battery-containing products, liquids, powders and pastes need case-by-case confirmation, and generally prohibited categories do not move at all.
