What You Learn at a Cross-border Expo: The Questions We Actually Hear

The most common expo questions are not about price — they are about address changes after consolidation, returns, when free storage starts, and restricted items.

Nobody walks up to a booth asking about price

Two days of standing at an expo floor produces one clear observation: the first question is almost never "what is your rate per kilogram." It is some version of "will this actually work for my situation." That is a better use of a booth than a rate card, because a rate card is emailed to anyone who asks.

Here are the four questions we get most, and the follow-ups that matter more than the answers.

"Can I still change the address after consolidation?"

The honest answer is that it depends on where the box is. Before consolidation, yes, freely. After consolidation, the box is sealed and moving through line-haul, and changes become expensive or impossible depending on the destination.

The practical advice we give: get the address right before you consolidate. That means checking the format, confirming the recipient's real name, and confirming there is not a second name field being filled inconsistently. Once a box is sealed, hope is the only thing left.

Timing Can the address change?
Parcels still arriving Yes, freely
Consolidating now, not yet sealed Yes
Box sealed and in transit Difficult, destination-dependent
Box delivered No

"How do returns work?"

This one gets asked by anyone who has shipped internationally before, because they already know the pain of it. The questions underneath it: who pays the return freight, what happens to a refund for a lost parcel, and whether you can reship rather than refund.

Our standing advice is that you should work these three questions out with your supplier before you need them. The warehouse can tell you how returns move; it cannot decide your refund policy.

If your business involves sending goods to individual buyers domestically rather than to yourself, Yunque Post handles the dispatch side of that — 17+ platform APIs, one-piece shipping, up to 180 days of free storage — but returns remain a policy question on your side.

"When does the free storage clock start?"

The question behind this one is always the same: does the slow factory lead time eat my free window?

At Youmanman Parcel Forwarding, the 90 days of free storage count from the day your first parcel is received. Nothing is charged before that either, so factory lead time does not consume the window. This is the single most-misunderstood rule we have, and it is worth stating plainly rather than leaving it to a rate card footnote.

Youmanman Cloud Warehouse runs the same structure: small-item storage waived for 90 days and no system usage fee. Storage is not freight — line-haul is still settled against the channel rate.

"Can my category ship at all?"

Battery, liquid, powder — the questions cluster here, and the answer is always "it depends on the channel, and you need to tell us in advance."

The general frame:

  • Battery-containing products — power banks, lithium batteries, power tools. Sometimes shippable with reinforcement, must be confirmed.
  • Liquids — perfume, serums, oils. Per-item volume limits and leak-proof packing.
  • Powders and pastes — channel restrictions are common.
  • Flammable goods, compressed gas, blades, live plants and animals, tobacco and alcohol — generally prohibited.

What we tell everyone at the booth: do not declare a restricted item as general goods. If it is seized, it is destroyed and the freight is not refunded.

What a booth conversation is actually for

Price lists get emailed. A booth is for working out whether your situation has an edge case nobody has thought about. The four questions above are edge cases that come up constantly.

If you are near Shenzhen, Yiwu, Dongguan or Zhengzhou, come by with your actual order flow. Bring a real SKU list if you have one. We will tell you which parts of your operation are straightforward and which parts are not.

FAQ

Q: Does the 90-day free storage window start at the first parcel's arrival? A: Yes. From the day your first parcel is received into the warehouse, at Youmanman Parcel Forwarding. Nothing is charged for the period before that either, so factory lead time does not eat into it.

Q: Can I change the delivery address after my parcels are consolidated? A: Before sealing, yes. After that it becomes difficult and destination-dependent, and sometimes impossible. Get the address format confirmed before consolidating — check the recipient name in particular.

Q: Which products can ship through consolidation? A: Most goods. Battery-containing products, liquids, powders and pastes each need case-by-case confirmation. Flammable goods, compressed gas, blades, live plants and animals, tobacco and alcohol are generally prohibited.

Q: What does consolidation actually save? A: It removes repeated first-weight charges and reduces total outer-box volume, which is charged as volumetric weight. It is usually meaningfully cheaper than shipping parcels separately — but only once you have three or more parcels.

Q: Can you ship from one of your four warehouses? A: Yes — the network sits in Shenzhen, Dongguan, Yiwu and Zhengzhou, chosen for geography rather than routing. Which one suits your goods depends on origin, destination and lane availability. Ask your advisor.
