Making the Most of 90-Day Free Storage in Parcel Forwarding
The 90-day free storage window starts at your first parcel's arrival, not your order date. How to plan the window, and when shipping early beats waiting.
The clock starts at the first parcel, not the order
This is where most people get it wrong by a lot. The 90 days of free storage at Youmanman Parcel Forwarding are counted from the day your first parcel is received into the warehouse — not the day you clicked buy, and not the day you started shopping.
If your first parcel lands on the 1st and the last one arrives on the 20th, you have 90 days from the 1st. Those parcels sitting in your cart for a week before you shipped them? Those days were never free storage, because nobody had taken the goods.
| Event | Effect on the window |
|---|---|
| Browsing and adding to cart | Nothing — window has not started |
| First parcel received | Clock starts |
| Remaining parcels arrive later | Clock keeps running from the first |
| You request consolidation | Clock stops |
Three parcels is roughly where consolidation starts paying
Consolidated freight is billed in four separate parts:
| Step | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Inbound | Domestic parcel to our warehouse |
| Consolidation | Parcels combined into one export box |
| Export line | Main carriage to the destination country |
| Last mile | Destination country to your door |
If you only have one parcel, the consolidation handling fee is pure cost with nothing to offset it. If you have three, you pay first-weight once instead of three times, and the outer box volume is usually far smaller than the three parcels summed together.
That second point is the one people miss. Consolidation does not just save repeated first weight — it reduces the total volume being charged, because air between parcels disappears.
Storage and consolidation are two different decisions
Free storage covers how long you hold goods. Consolidation covers how many parcels go into one box. They get confused constantly.
You could hold everything for 90 days and still ship three separate boxes if your orders arrived in a rush and you requested consolidation three times. Free storage does not reduce your shipping cost. Only combining parcels does.
Conversely, you can consolidate on day 2 and still sit on the export window — but once consolidated, the parcels are inside a sealed box and the free-storage clock has no further use.
Chargeable weight is decided twice
Worth knowing because it explains why the same cart of goods costs different amounts depending on when you ship:
- Each parcel is weighed on arrival, actual weight recorded
- Volume is converted to volumetric weight, using the coefficient for your channel
- The larger of actual and volumetric becomes that parcel's chargeable weight
- After consolidation, the export box is reweighed, and the larger of box weight and its volumetric weight applies
Step 4 is a fresh calculation, not a sum. After consolidation the outer box volume is usually much smaller than the parcels sent separately — that is where the saving comes from.
The divisor varies by channel, which is why a coefficient copied from a forum post is not safe to use. Ask which coefficient applies to your lane.
Waiting for more parcels is a trade, not a free win
Every day you wait hoping to add another parcel is a day your window shortens. If your cart is complete and the next thing you need is not likely to arrive soon, ship.
If you genuinely expect two or three more parcels within a week, waiting is usually right — the incremental cost of those parcels' inbound handling is small compared with paying first-weight again on a separate box.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Cart complete, nothing else coming | Ship now |
| One or two parcels expected this week | Wait for them |
| Waiting on a big restock | Ship what you have, order again later |
| Free window is about to end | Ship regardless |
What can be sent at all
Check this before you shop, not after. Restricted categories need case-by-case confirmation:
- Battery-containing products — power banks, lithium batteries, power tools. Some channels can carry these with reinforcement, but confirm in advance.
- Liquids — perfume, serums, oils. Subject to per-item volume limits and leak-proof packing.
- Powders and pastes — channel restrictions are common.
- Flammable goods, compressed gas, blades, live plants and animals, tobacco and alcohol — generally prohibited.
The practical rule: do not declare a restricted item as general goods. If a parcel is seized it is destroyed and the freight is not refunded. Send us a link or a product name first.
FAQ
Q: When does the 90-day free storage window start? A: From the day your first parcel is received into the warehouse. Parcels you bought but had not shipped do not count, because they were not in storage.
Q: Is free storage also free shipping? A: No. The 90 days cover storage only. Inbound, consolidation, export line and last mile are each settled against their own rate.
Q: How long can my parcels stay before I have to ship? A: 90 days of free storage from first arrival. Consolidate and ship whenever you are ready within that window — there is no penalty for shipping early.
Q: Can parcels from different shops go into one box? A: Yes, as long as they are under the same member ID and all arrive within the free-storage window.
Q: What if a parcel is lost in transit? A: It goes through the standard compensation process. Photograph the sealed export box before it ships and keep your order screenshots — that evidence is what speeds up a claim.
